Garbage Poll

Okkkkk say you lost your job and home... no really, you did.

Would you rather go to DSS and get some help (I mean after all.... why else were you paying taxes all those years) or would you go dumpster diving for pop cans?

I know we shouldn't judge others without walking in their shoes.... but I need to believe the story of those shoes first. And frankly? I don't believe one capital letter of it. (or even small one)

ME EITHER.

I don't get it.

I knew I couldn't have been the only one. I was pretty much done during the "send me a check" thread.

What are the tax implications of buying and selling things for profit?

I'm all for people turning to OT and asking for comfort and moral support. I do draw the line at being shouted into being a cheering section.

I'd go to DSS. The problem with our society's welfare system isn't caused by the people who need it as a stopgap in emergencies, it's the people who decide they're better off staying there that cause problems and give the whole thing a bad name.

I'd be interested to know what's REALLY going on in that person's life.

Umm, that said, there is a lot of money to be made in cans and bottles. For the last couple of years, I've asked tennis friends and relatives to save their cans for me if they would otherwise not be redeeming them.

We did it as a fundraiser for my daughter's baton twirling expenses and it was better than asking people to buy worthless crap from us. I'd pick up bottles and cans at their home or at the racquet club, store them in our garage, then take them once every few months and redeem them. It made a difference.

My two comments after reading that whole thread:
1) Why are people surprised those working at DSS aren't little butterflies of happiness and hope? That's no reason to turn your back on a system that is there to help you.

2)Why won't people take a job at McDonald's, etc. to get by? Deliver newspapers, something? With no children, no other obligations, what's the problem? At least it's a paycheck. If I were to lose my job today, I'd have zero problem going to work fast food or retail or SOMETHING to get a paycheck asap. Sure, I might take unemployment for awhile, but if I was striking out on a job hunt, I'd certainly look anywhere else for a paycheck.

mtw- recycling cans for fundraising is great! Heck I recyle my cans here, but... I'm not going to dig thru the garbage to get them.

I agree Kim. Which is why I think her story is BS.

MRC needs some applause! He asked some good questions.

Actually, those are pretty easy to answer. I've used the public library for computing before, and that's how my sister does it. I'm sure lots of others do, too.

I know there are public programs for prepaid cell phones for homeless (so they can get jobs), but I can't imagine that's what she's using with her disdain for public assistance.

Easy yes, but around here libraries aren't open on Sundays and they block access to a lot of sites. I know peeps that OT is blocked for them at work, I would expect a library might. (but have never tested)

Wouldn't she have had to go to DSS to get a free prepaid cellphone? We all know she won't do that.

I told MRC he forgot to ask her about going to the movies too.

Monsty said her piece and it was right on. I know she couldn't be an EMT anymore because of some weight loss and she couldn't lift. Wouldn't her chipper attitude and quiet life accomodate her bulking up physically? One doesn't need to be rich to be buff. A loaf of bread from Kwik Trip is only .39 and peanut butter is always in season at the food pantry. Both good for bulking up. Heck, I might not have the "can do" attitude to do that, but she sure seems to.

I have no idea what's happening over there but I always figure you do whatever it takes - go to DSS, dumpster dive, sling fries, clean toilets, whatever. I also know that there are some few people who just can't pull off any of the above without help. Or even with help. But I think if you can figure out how to ask for support on a public message board then you are not one of those few.

Didn't she get a job as a chef? I'll give her some of my weight so she can bulk up.

She lost that job.

Well she gave her story on her internet use.

Breezy, I wouldn't dumpster dive for the cans either. Blech!
